Before you go

Six Things to Know First

The state programs set these rules, and they can change. The state pages are always the final word.

Register with the State First

A certification from Dr. Ewals isn't enough on its own. You can buy once the state has approved your registration. Bring photo ID and your card or registry details.

North Dakota: In-State Only

A North Dakota card covers buying and possessing only from the state's registered dispensaries. State law doesn't protect cannabis bought anywhere else.

Visiting North Dakota?

Patients from other states need North Dakota's 60-day electronic nonresident card before buying here. You must be 19 or older and hold a valid card from your home state.

Minnesota: First Purchase

Minnesota doesn't mail a card. The dispensary looks you up in the state registry, and you complete the patient self-evaluation before your first purchase.

Don't Cross State Lines with It

Cannabis is still illegal under federal law. Don't carry it between North Dakota and Minnesota, even with a card in each state.

Say You're a Patient

Many Minnesota medical dispensaries also serve adult-use customers. Tell the staff you're a registered patient and ask what's available to patients.

See every question
Can I get a North Dakota medical marijuana card online?

Yes. Eligible residents can complete their medical evaluation by telehealth, submit their application online, and receive a state decision without a routine trip to the clinic. Additional examination or documentation may be required.

How much does a medical marijuana card cost in North Dakota?

A new-patient evaluation at Alternative Health costs $250. North Dakota charges a separate $40 application fee, for a typical combined initial cost of $290.

What conditions qualify for medical marijuana in North Dakota?

Qualifying conditions include anxiety disorders, PTSD, migraines, neuropathy, fibromyalgia, certain chronic pain conditions, and other state-recognized diagnoses. Certification requires an individualized medical evaluation.

Do I need medical records to qualify?

Medical documentation helps verify your condition and clinical history. If you don't have records readily available, contact our team before booking to discuss what information is needed.

Can I get certified the same day?

Your provider may be able to complete the clinical evaluation during your appointment, but certification depends on your medical circumstances and the required state application steps. A same-day visit does not mean same-day state approval.

How long does North Dakota take to approve a medical marijuana card?

North Dakota advises allowing two to four weeks after receiving a complete application, payment, and provider certification. Processing may take longer if information is missing.

How long is a North Dakota medical marijuana card valid?

Generally two years. The state recommends renewing approximately 45 days before your current card expires.

Where can I buy medical marijuana in North Dakota?

Approved patients may purchase authorized products from North Dakota's registered medical marijuana dispensaries. The state does not extend the same protections to products purchased outside its authorized dispensary system.

Can I get a Minnesota medical cannabis card online?

Yes. You can have your evaluation by telehealth from anywhere in Minnesota, then enroll with the state online from the link it emails you. Dr. Ewals may ask for more records if needed.

Can I get a same-day medical cannabis evaluation in Minnesota?

Alternative Health may offer same-day medical evaluations, completely online by telehealth, when appointments are available. The state controls enrollment approval, and that process usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. Call Will at (218) 274-4500 to check today's openings.

How much does a Minnesota medical cannabis card cost?

A new-patient evaluation at Alternative Health is $250. Minnesota charges patients no fee to enroll or re-enroll, so $250 is the total (checked October 2026). Returning patients Dr. Ewals certified before pay $230.

What conditions qualify for medical cannabis in Minnesota?

Minnesota law lists 19 conditions, including chronic pain, PTSD, cancer, seizures, autism, irritable bowel syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea. Your practitioner can also certify another condition when cannabis is recommended (checked October 2026). See the full list.
